The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is a non-profit educational organization that recruits and trains volunteers to tutor adults who need to develop basic reading, writing, and English speaking skills. Since 1962, the Literacy Council has trained thousands of volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to adults in our community.
The Literacy Council is the oldest nonprofit adult literacy program in Virginia. We are an affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide, a national literacy organization that certifies trainers and provides instructional materials and support. The Literacy Council is the recipient of the Virginia State Reading Association's Annual Literacy Award, the Virginia Literacy Foundation's Award for Outstanding Literacy Program in the Commonwealth and the Governor's Award for Volunteering Excellence. The ESL Learning Centers Partnership was also recognized by the Virginia Literacy Foundation as the 1996 Outstanding Literacy Project in Virginia.
The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia provides services to students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, or sex.
