Community Survival Guide

for New Immigrants

Adult ESL students in the Family Learning Program from the Timberlane Elementary School, Main Street Child Development Center and Crestwood Elementary School were given disposable cameras during the Fall 2001 semester.  As part of their unit of study on Civics and Community issues, the students identified important places and resources in their community that would be helpful for new immigrants to know about.  In pairs, they took pictures of their neighborhoods and places they frequently visit.  Students then wrote about the places they photographed and created maps of their communities.   The photographs, paragraphs and maps were then compiled into PowerPoint slides as well as booklets.  In addition, an interactive map of the county was created so that the information could be accessed via the Internet.  Please take a moment to view the map and information about various locations in Fairfax County, by clicking here
