Basic Literacy Program to use Slosson Oral Reading Test

Beginning in July, Basic Literacy Placement Advisors will be using the Slosson Oral Reading Test, a standardized test consisting of word lists, as part of their intake interview with all new students. The state is now requiring pre and post test results for our students, using a standardized test. We chose the Slosson (SORT-R) because it is very easy to administer, and provides a quick estimate of a person's word recognition skills. It will also provide tutors with a quick guide to their student's progress.

We will be asking our Basic Literacy tutors to do the follow-up post testing with their students. The test and instructions will be mailed to tutors. After the tests are returned, we will provide tutors with feedback about their students' progress. If you have any questions when you receive the test, please contact Sandi Eisenstein at ext. 105.
